Maurice Sendak Lives and My Flourescent Nightmares

Maurice Sendak lives.

And his name is Andy Kehoe. Check out his flickr photostream and Etsy shop.

Here comes some neon driftwood:

By Ginette Lapalme.

Now mash up those two, and you get my old crush AJ Fosik, whose wooden sculptures look like the lovechild of a totem pole and a skateboard:

Here he is on vimeo and on flickr.

Medium Envy

I have medium envy.

(Once upon a time, somebody must have said that about a dude with a sharp stick.)

This collection is about artists and designers who use unusual materials in a compelling way.

............

Tsuri Gueta is a superstar textile designer, from Israel of course. His innovative techniques (like injecting silicon through fabric) lend themselves to art, jewelry and accessories that evoke images of part sea creature, part alien.

............

Korean artist Ji Yong Ho made these giant sculptures of mythical creatures out of recycled tires.

............

Medusa bags, industrial techniques on processed plastic.

............

Dr. Craze makes jewelry from tinted concrete.

............

Mark Giles and Judy Lawrence (together Miju) dip their jewelry in rubber. Inexplicably, I want to eat these rings.

............

Embroidery stop-motion by Taboo Plus, Israeli alternative-rapper-musician-graphic designer.

............

I ran into these kids a year ago when I was escaping from psychology class to the nearby Bezalel school of art and design. They make wallets, bags and all sorts of stuff out of fused castoff plastic bags, which is the only legitimate use I've seen for the evil things. I've been harassing them to get on Etsy and raving about my wallet (made by them) to anyone who would listen ever since, but they're keeping a low profile... Their stuff is available in a few stores in Jerusalem and directly through them.
